“Lake Atitlan is one of Guatemala’s top tourist destinations. The vast body of water is inside a huge volcanic crater in the South Western highlands of Guatemala, department of Sololá. Roughly 90 miles from Guatemala City the Lake has become increasingly popular with travel makers searching for beautiful scenery, relaxed vibes and interesting towns. It is the best place to go for a taste of authentic Guatemalan culture. 

The lake is estimated to be 19 km long, 12 km wide and with a maximum depth of 340 meters, is the deepest lake in the Central America region. The endothecium lake is not connected to the sea and was formed from volcanic activity over 80,000 years ago. 

The easiest and fastest way to travel around Lake Atitlan is by the local lancha boats. Lancha depart frequently from the different towns’ docks and there are a number of routes and lines to get you from A to B. 

For arriving and departing from the lake, Panajachel and San Pedro La Laguna are the best connected municipalities with main roads that provide direct routes to other popular tourist destinations throughout the Country, including the airport in Guatemala City.”
